Then: The town was founded in 1537 by a chieftain, Kempe Gowda, who was gifted the land by a Vijaynagar emperor and situated at a height of 1914 meters. Bangalore grew and prospered under the good influence of monarchs such as Tipu Sultan and the rulers of the Wodeyar dynasty. The Dewan of the princely state of Mysore promoted and encouraged industry, both in the public and private sectors, in pre-independence Bangalore.
Now: Bangalore is famous for its silks, sandalwood, rosewood, software, and prestigious institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science.
